Structure B150, Midland Expressway

Installed temporary soil nails to an embankment to enable the Main Contractor to create the new toll roll. The live railways bridge above the works required a very high specification for the consruction and regular monitoring.

Queen Elizabeth Distribution Centre, Purfleet

Phi Group designed and installed a 14m high reinforced soil wall to support an access road into the new distribution centre at Purfleet. This solution cut two thirds off the cost of the original proposal for a contiguous bored piled wall.

Harbour Approach Road, Ramsgate

High density polyethylene geogrids were designed to reinforce site-won chalk fill material, enabling it to be used for the approach earthworks to a new over bridge. The grids were connected to vertical Geolock facing blocks using purpose made concrete inserts all in accordance with the system’s BBA Certificate for Highway Works.

Stoney Close, Leicester

Split face minor blocks were used in conjunction with ground anchors to create space for new access roads to a Driving Training Centre near Leicester.

Abbots Leigh, Bristol

Connecting Junction 19 of the M5 and Bedminster south of Bristol, a stretch of the busy A369 has been suffering from failing embankments near the Somerset village of Abbots Leigh.

A90 Widening

Raynesway Construction was appointed by Fife Council to widen the A90 motorway to provide an additional lane to access a Park and Ride service. However there was a major problem, adjacent to the works was an existing embankment which could not be re-graded due to lack of space.

Moor Lane, Rowley Regis

Phi Group acted as Main Contractor to replace an existing failed retaining wall supporting this busy road. A high security fence and vehicular barrier were incorporated into top of the retaining wall.

Brindley Ford Flood Alleviation

Designed and installed Andacrib concrete precast to support the embankment to enable the widening of the stream as part of flood alleviation.

Wembley Light Maintenance Rail Depot

One major rail project currently underway is for M40 Trains Limited / Chiltern Railways and involves the design and construction by Mowlem plc of a light maintenance rail depot in the shadow of the new stadium.

Capenscleugh, Haydon Bridge, Northumberland

Following an embankment failure the Capenscleugh Road between Haydon Bridge and Fourstones, near Hexham was closed to vehicular traffic. Whilst only a minor road, the alternative was a 7 mile detour and so it was imperative that it should be re-opened as quickly as possible.
