Client : Lend Lease
Contractor : Jackson Civil Engineering
Project : Bluewater Park - Northern Perimeter Road
Wall Height : 9 metres

Design Criteria:

This project was part of the Northern Perimeter access road for the prestigious new Bluewater Retail Park that was being constructed in the massive amphitheatre of a redundant chalk quarry in north west Kent. The American architect liked the idea

of modular block retaining walls but was keen to continue the panelling detail that was used for the external treatment of the principle buildings.

Solution:

Phi Group imaginatively modified a standard block to enable this detail to be incorporated into four large reinforced soil ramps as well as the retaining walls around a pedestrian underpass. The Ivory coloured split face blocks complimented the chalk cliffs that surrounded the site and the scheme was further enhanced by the use of matching blocks to clad the bridge abutments and piers to create these unique and dramatic structures. Phi Group designed, supplied and built 3300 m2 of walling up to 9m high that incorporated steel ladder grid reinforcement in over 20,000 m3 of 6I/6J sand backfill. Over 900 m2 of cladding was involved together with the supply of 800 lin.m of matching pre-cast parapet units and feature roundels.
