Contractor : Redrow Homes
Project : Redrow Homes Development, Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield
Wall Height : 9 metres

Additional development space has been created for housing by the installation of a 9m high, 125m long reinforced soil slope. The steeply sloping site,

underlain by highly weathered mudstone with a high water table provided some difficult design and construction challenges. The overall stability of any retaining solution is of critical concern.
A tailored design solution was provided to overcome this using geogrid reinforcement in combination with a granular fill, to intercept any critical slip planes. A gravel pillar drain, separated from the existing ground by a geotextile filtration fabric, was formed at the rear of the reinforced soil slope to control groundwater seepage. A geosynthetic three dimensional erosion control mat was placed on the finished face to retain a 75mm thick layer of topsoil, which was then vegetated by grass Hydroseeding in combination with hand planted ivy.
