Phi Group has successfully completed earth retaining works to facilitate the widening of slip roads to the busy commuter junction 4 on the M20 in Kent.
Several methods were used for the scheme to produce the most cost effective overall solution. One 6 metre high slope was designed with soil nailing at the base, to minimise temporary works excavation, combining with geogrid reinforced soil for the top fill section.

The face of both sections was formed using Phi Group’s ‘Textomur’ system, a sacrificial steel mesh backed by a topsoil retention fabric so that the finished 60 degree slope could be grass seeded on completion.

Gravity walls using gabions created space for highway services, and Phi Group’s ‘Terraforce’ hollow concrete block was used to support the edge of a stretch of widened carriageway.
The project took 3 months to complete, commencing at the start of May and finishing at the end of July 2006.
