Work has begun on a new structure for builders merchant Jewson on a nine-acre site called Antelope Park in Southampton. Jewson will relocate from its current premises to a new 21,000 sq ft building at the rear of the site, which is expected to be complete in August this year.

was required and to solve this problem, main contractor Norwest Holst contracted Phi Group Limited, the retaining structure specialist to design, supply and build two Permacrib timber retaining walls.

One Permacrib retaining wall with a face area of 296 square metres and a maximum height of 5.48 metres was required along the back and around the left side of the site to support the embankment behind. The insitu ground is firm to stiff clay and therefore could be cut at a 30 degree angle.
Another Permacrib retaining wall with a face area of 260 square metres and a maximum height of 5.31 metres was constructed to the front and right side of the building to support the difference in levels between the area the building is being constructed on, and the adjacent highway. This filled wall has been designed to take a 35kPa superimposed live load, therefore bespoke Permacrib Headers 1800mm long have been specially manufactured for certain sections.
Phi Group commenced work on the first wall during the first week in April and after a continuous period of 8 weeks on site, successfully completed the contract at the end of May this year.
