A new 87,000 square feet supermarket is under construction on the edge of Carmarthen town centre on the site previously owned by Carmarthen Athletic Rugby Club.
The project required a cut and fill exercise to maximise the amount of developable area, and from an early stage in the project Phi Group the retaining wall specialist assisted site developers Morbaine Limited with the design of the retaining structures to achieve this.
Consequently Phi's proposals were incorporated within the Main Contract Tender package. The successful Contractor, HBG Construction, then instructed Phi Group, to undertake the design, supply and construction of the five separate retaining walls.
Three Permacrib retaining walls were designed, supplied and built, in total 260m long, with a maximum height of 5.3 metres. These were used to support the boundary and public footpaths to the northern side of the site.
Vertical retaining walls with a maximum height of 6 metres were also required across the southern and western boundaries of the site to maximise the area of development for parking next to the store and service yard areas. For this requirement Phi Group's Titan Block was specified as it utilises soil reinforcement to strengthen the soils and incorporates some of the site won soils in the construction of the structure. Two Titan block walls were designed in total 320m long with a maximum height of 6.2 metres, a total of 1600 square metres.
In addition because the site was previously on fill it was important to minimise the bearing pressures of the structure and the Reinforced Soil Design method provides much lower bearing pressures than any other comparable systems.
At the highest point within one of the Titan walls there was a combined sewer which required a 6 metre wide easement to provide for future maintenance requirements. Phi Group's solution was to incorporate a section of the Titan wall that if needed could be dismantled minimising disruption to the Tesco Car Park above.
Speed of installation was also a factor as both products could be installed in only twelve weeks and Phi Group completed their walls within budget and on time.
